FLES
Instructor: Sra. Clelland
Tyler Elementary School is a world language specialty school.  The FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) program at Tyler provides students with Spanish instruction in grades 1st - 5th.  FLES is part of the Encore block schedule. Students receive approximately 45 minutes of instruction once every four days.  Sra. Clelland is the Spanish teacher on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Sra. Horowitz is the Spanish teacher Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
The FLES program follows Prince William County Public Schools learning objectives and the Virginia Standards of Learning objectives.  The Spanish instructional program correlates well with many language arts objectives reinforcing many reading skills (sound/symbol association, comprehension, grammar, etc.).  In addition, math, social studies and science objectives are also taught.
The Spanish program follows a thematic approach and focuses primarily on oral communication.  All skills follow a particular theme.  During the 1st nine weeks we are introducing and/or reviewing greetings, colors, calendar, emotions, weather and number concepts.  Students in 2- 5th grade are learning subject and adjective gender agreement.  This is an important concept in Spanish that does not occur in English.  This is taught using color words to describe both feminine and masculine nouns.  Review is an integral component of the Spanish program.
Parents of third and fifth grade students receive semester evaluations of their students progress.  Any parent who wishes additional information on their students progress in Spanish can contact Sra. Clelland or Sra. Horowitz
