Tyler Elementary School is a world language specialty school. The FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) program at Tyler provides students with Spanish instruction for approximately one hour a week in grades first through fourth. It is a pull out program and students come during their language arts instructional time. The Fifth grade students receive 45 minutes of Spanish instruction once a week during their core extension instructional time.
The FLES program follows Prince William County Public Schools learning objectives and the Virginia Standards of Learning objectives. The Spanish instructional program correlates well with many language arts objectives reinforcing many reading skills (sound/symbol association, comprehension, grammar, etc.). In addition, math, social studies and science objectives are also taught.
The Spanish program follows a thematic approach and focuses primarily on oral communication. All skills follow a particular theme. During the 2nd nine weeks the main themes are body parts, family, emotions and food. These concepts will be taught around the current events and in relationship to other concepts and not in isolation. Common words that describe will be included (i.e. big, little, happy, pretty, smart, etc.). This will also provide an opportunity to teach the students noun/adjective agreement an important concept in Spanish. We will continue to review greetings, colors, shapes, calendar, weather, counting and classroom objects. Review is an integral component of the Spanish program.
